ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
As a native of Gary, Indiana, Floyd Daniel Hobson III (also known as Daniel Warhol due to his affection for Andy Warhol) has always been seen as an artistically inclined individual amongst his family and friends. Born October 10th, 1986 to Floyd Daniel Hobson, Jr. and Tamara Hobson-Odum, he lived a hard life that led him to take solitude in the world of art at the age of seven.
While at West Side High School, Hobson found his inspiration in the industry of art, through various heroes such as Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Guy Bourdin, Jean-Michel Basquiat , and his biggest influence, Andrew Warhola, known more affectionately as Andy Warhol. Having had inspirations to be a fashion model in his teenage years, he found himself not being able to get work, namely due to his race and build, and proceeded to show his potential by shooting himself with web cameras, and disposables. At the suggestion of many of his mentors, he began to shoot others in order to showcase his eye to the world.
Since 2007, Floyd Hobson’s photography has been published for many media outlets from VIBE (also interning for VIbe Media Group) , Bleu Magazine, Heed Magazine, Hip Hop Weekly, Vogue Italia and various blogs.
“I think the world is way too special and fascinating to not want to take advantage of keeping a piece of it for future generations to see. I realized that when i bought my first Vogue Magazine at the age of 12, and when i picked up my first SLR camera at the age of 20.” Completely self-taught in his craft, Hobson has a knack of wanting to showcase individuals through elements derived from popular culture, African American history, and multiculturalism he has come across from his life experiences. “One of my idols, Grace Coddington, said it best in “The September Issue” that you should never close your eyes on a car ride, because the world is too beautiful to where you can get inspired easily”, says Hobson. “I feel that just by walking out my door, I can be inspired. I tend to get my inspiration from life itself.”
Hobson holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, and in African American and African Diaspora Studies, in addition to a Master’s in African American and African Diaspora Studies, all from Indiana University Bloomington. He is currently shooting freelance in the genre of fashion photography and noir art, as well as earning his Doctorate from Indiana University. Outside of going to school in Bloomington, Indiana, Warhol resides in New York City.
